The magic of information. The essence of generating information for
the purpose of creating a computer catalogue at the books' accumulation
and processing stage, with respect to readers' suggestions
The article presents the history of implementation and basic
capabilities of a computer catalogue in APIN system, installed at the
Wroclaw Politechnic's Main Library and OINT.
Since 1998 the system was expanded by the addition of DATA GATHERING
(GROMADZENIE) module which, besides the automation of functions
pertaining to accumulating and sorting texts, generates main catalogue
data about recently acquired books and electronic documents. The skills
needed for effective and thorough catalogue data retrieval are developed
through user training and promotional activity. Wroclaw Polytechnic's
staff and students are actively involved in the process of purchasing
new titles by placing orders through the APIN system.

Librarian specialised or integrated? The model of co-operation with
the university, i.e. with all those willing to participate in the
difficult task of building-up the library
The speech raises the question of the search for the most efficient
model of library resources' development adapted to the needs and means
of Polish universities. The speech presents an opinion on the search
for optimal model of building a library collection adapted to the needs
and means of Polish universities. A central book acquisition system at
the Main Library of Wroclaw Polytechnic (comprising 25 academic
branches) was described. The system is based on acquisitions through
libraries' budget and individual purchases of institutes and staff (i.e.
from grants). All purchases are cleared by the central system, in
Acquisitions Department. The rector regulates the procedure employed by
the Department of Acquisitions. The staff, students and other clients
are encouraged to participate in the process of building the library
collection. The supportive role of GATHERING (GROMADZENIE) module,
which was designed for the library in 1998 and was integrated with the
APIN system, was stressed.
