Experiences in selecting books, periodicals and serials at University Library in Poznań (1999-2006)

The article concerns selection of books and serials which took place at University Library in Poznań between 1999-2006. Main aim of the selection - that is carried on permanently - is to create optimal conditions for collecting and lending documents. The process of selecting materials at Poznań University Library is defined by general dispositions and internal directives of University Library Director.
An ongoing selection of books and serials is based on eliminating from the holdings these units which do not satisfy scientific, research and didactic needs of science workers and students of the University. The selection is conducted by Acquisition and Collection Development Department as well as Selection and Assortment Commission.
The retrospective selection lead up by Library Subject Preparation Department together with Periodicals and Serials Department focuses on excluding from the collection these materials which have been edited after 1945. Most of them belong to the field of agricultural, medical and technical sciences. After necessary preservation, these materials are turned over to Section of Utilization of Unwanted Materials to be furtherly disposed.
The final outcome of selection is reducing multiple copies of one edition of the document. On the one hand it results in clarity of the collection and on the other it assures the space for new acquisitions.
