"Bibliotheca Sonans": A summary of the European Union project of the Wroclaw Chamber Musicians and the Wroclaw University Library.

Abstract: The project was completed with financial support from the European Union's Culture 2000 programme and was co-ordinated by the Wroclaw Chamber Musicians and co-organised by the Wroclaw University Library, the Karl-Franzers-Universität in Graz, Austria, and the Národní knihovna in Prague, Czech Republic. For one year (Sept. 2005 - Aug. 2005) reproductions of exceptional relics from these libraries were made available to the general public through travelling exhibitions, printed catalogues, concerts at opening events, as well as audio and visual materials on an Internet site. The Cantores Minores Wratislavienses choir and the early music group Ars Cantus performed at these exhibitions. Conservation, digitisation, and audio archiving of selected works were also conducted within the framework of the project. The goal of these activities was the preservation and popularisation of our common European cultural heritage. The article concludes with practical information drawn from our experience for all those who wish to apply for Union funds.

The project "The Saturday meet" - supported by PHARE fund.

It is common knowledge that public libraries have been seriously underfunded for a while now. This article's purpose is to present Lebork' s City Public Library's (Miejska Biblioteka Publiczna w Lęborku) experience in acquiring funding within the framework of one of the EU projects. Considering the librarians' lack of experience and the importance of the problem - the discussions have focused mainly on technical issues pertaining to the agenda and project financing.

The Kujawsko-Pomorska Digital Library (Kujawsko-Pomorska Biblioteka Cyfrowa -KPBC) - the update on the Integrated Regional Operational Programme (IROP) project.

The article presents a brief history of the Library - from the founding ideas up to the first publications. One of the more significant documents supporting the idea of founding the KPBC was the strategy of activities proposed by the Scientific Libraries Consortium of Kujawsko-Pomomorski Region. KPBC's contents will consist of three collections: cultural heritage works, instructional materials and documents regarding the region. The staff of three large libraries (Nicolaus Copernicus University Library in Toruń - project co-ordinator, Kazimierz Wielki University Library in Bydgoszcz and Collegium Medicum Library in Bydgoszcz) are responsible for the implementation of the project. The article sums up the progress of KPBC (the creation of digital lab, preparation and publishing of documents).

Projects as part of school library function.

According to the basic rules of an educational process, any graduate of Polish educational institution should have the ability to independently peruse library contents, to satisfy his/her reading needs, to do research, to critically assess and select information. The graduates should be assisted in these tasks by teachers, instructors and library staff who, in turn, should use various and interesting methods of presentation of the material they have at their disposal. The author gives the example of her school, where various educational projects were implemented (e.g. Socrates Comenius program).

Thanks to this initiative, the following projects will be implemented:

"We are growing up with books" - the Leszno project.

The problem of the low level of readership among children and teenagers stems from the so called functional illiteracy (lack of recreational reading, as well as reading without proper understanding of the processed text). In today's "digitalized" times, when time is money and young people are increasingly becoming fascinated by pictograms and slang, proper reading is becoming essential in the educational process. The staff of the Town Public Library in Leszno, acting within a framework of the project called "We are growing up with books", sponsored by the Minister of Culture and using interdisciplinary cultural activities, wants to contribute to the emotional and intellectual development of children. The program includes the following workshops:

  • "Family Evenings"
  • "Literary Cafe" - meeting with authors, writers and poets
  • "Around the Globe" - meetings with authors and travel literature
  • Exhibit meetings" - art workshops
  • series of various happenings
  • participation in the action "Poland reads to Kids"
