Digital libraries in Poland: conditions and threats

Digital libraries are a step towards the unavoidable shift to the common transmission of any textual content by the means of the Internet. Had they been built on the basis of traditional online catalogues, they would have not appealed to us as separate entities. Indeed, there is still time to force those catalogues to organize digital material. On the other hand, the coverage of the catalogues is inadequate as they fail to include some genres and formats, and it is urgent to widen access to sources in countries like Poland, where circulation of scholarly information tends to encounter several cultural and economic barriers. Without fundamental institutional changes digital libraries will not be perceived and used as resources for research. Despite the progress made, existing services are immature in terms of programmes, content and navigation, including the necessary linking to the original document (if it exists). Strict (centralized) coordination of digital projects and licencing is indispensable to ensure the completeness of digital libraries and to ad to them their adequate intellectual dimension.
