NUKAT Center.

The article presents basic concepts of the NUKAT project, rules for shared cataloging and downloading of NUKAT records. The second part of the article contains an analysis of the results of shared cataloging from the past 14 months.

Art. 2: Krystyna Szylhabel,
Implementation of the ALEPH system and its impact on book processing.

The article describes the process of implementing the ALEPH system at the Library of the Wroclaw University of Technology. It addresses the problem of converting data from the APIN system to ALEPH, and describes the process of creating authority files in the new system. Furthermore, it indicates some ways of collaborating with NUKAT and mentions the methods of obtaining information for the purpose of processing collections.

The status of librarians in the light of the new Law on Higher Edication.

The author discusses the legal status of librarians in the light of the new Law on Higher Education developed by the Polish Rectors' Foundation and released on May 26, 2003. The article deals with the status of librarians and certified librarians who are considered academic teachers. Special focus was given to the issues of working time and holidays.

Art. 4: Elżbieta Plewa,
The international student exchange program Socrates/Erasmus.

This report discusses the conditions for participating in the international student exchange program Socrates/Erasmus. The author describes her own experiences at a foreign university and summarizes her three-month stay. The primary intention of the article is to encourage students, particularly library science students, to compete for scholarships, especially since the current job market makes it necessary to undertake this type of initiatives.

Above the European Union border. A report from the trip of the Wroclaw University of Technology librarians to Słubice, Frankfurt and Zielona Góra.

The article reports on the training trip of librarians from the Wroclaw University of Technology to libraries of Collegium Polonicum in Słubice, Viadrina University in Frankfurt and the University of Zielona Góra, which took place on May 26-27, 2003. The goal of the tour was to gain an understanding of how these libraries operate.

Scientific information systems - international occupational safety and health information system (CIS).

The author discusses the organization and activities of international scientific information system on occupational safety and health, as well as, on ergonomics and connected CIS subjects. The system was developed in 1959 by International Occupational Safety and Health Information Center (CIS) in Geneva. It forms part of the International Labor Office (ILO). The activities and publications of the Center, as well as, of the network of 135 National and Collaborating Centers are described. These centers function in 100 countries on all continents. In Poland, the Central Institute for Labor Protection at the National Research Institute (CIOP-PIB) has played the role of the National CIS Center since 1960. The activities of the Polish Center in terms of providing access to CIS materials and information to Polish users, as well as, methods of international dissemination of Polish information by the CIS system are presented.

The state of protection of libraries forming part of the Polish National Library against crime and the activities aimed at improving their security.

The state of security of libraries was prepared on the basis of 40 questionnaires dealing with the protection libraries that form a part of the Polish National Library and on the basis of information supplied by the Supreme Chamber of Control on the state of security and conditions of storage of the Polish National Library. The article presents the state of physical, construction, mechanical and electronic safety measures.

Art. 8: Marek Nahotko,
The Semantic Web and its ontologies.

The article provides a short description of one of the more important tools used for creating the Semantic Web – ontologies, which form a conceptual representation of knowledge accumulated and disseminated via the Internet. The author demonstrates a simple example of an ontology written in OIL and an example of applying Dublin Core metadata in a description of an ontology.
