Can the sleeping be awakened politely?

The author suggests ways of improving the financial well-being of the Polish Librarians Association. He argues that the PLA must change its attitude and extend its services beyond the library community. It must begin to support the activities of entities that are eager to invest in good projects.

Art. 2: Katarzyna Zurawska,
BOBCATSSS - developing international cooperation.

The article discusses the history of BOBCATSSS and its goals. Association members meet every year for a conference to exchange experiences. The February 2003 conference is discussed. Subjects raised at the conference and participants are presented.

Art. 3: Marta Sobieszek,
American and British organizations and associations related to libraries.

The article describes 25 library organizations and associations operating in the United States and Great Britain. The list is arranged by subject and links to organizations' websites are also provided.

Art. 4: Sabina Cisek,
Polish Society for Scientific Information.

The article points to key activities of the Polish Society for Scientific Information. Since there have been many recent publications thoroughly analyzing the history, mission, goals, accomplishments and future plans of the society, the author simply outlines its function and activities.

Art. 5: Elżbieta Wi¶niewska,
Society for Teacher Librarians of Polish Schools Torun Division.

The Torun Division of the society was created in 2000, on the initiative of Malgorzata Borcz and Elzbieta Wisniewska of the Teacher Training College of Foreign Languages in Torun and Dorota Komendzinska of the Pedagogical Library. The society aims to unite the community of teacher librarians, to improve their involvement in the life of libraries, and to represent the interest of the librarian community on the outside. The Torun Division organizes exhibitions, workshops and training. It uses its own website to exchange experiences with other librarians.

Polish Librarians Association. 85 years of activity - a look ahead

It is considered that the Polish Librarians Association began its activity in 1917, when it had 117 members. Since its formation, the PLA had an established structure. The goals of the association changed according to shifting conditions that marked the history of the country. It began to publish its periodicals and engage in international cooperation activities, shortly after it was created. Currently, PLA has 9000 active members, publishes 6 professional journals, organizes conferences and conventions. Some of its future objectives include improving the professional qualifications of its members and changing the image of libraries.

The article provides a broad historical outline of the PLA, its past accomplishments and plans for the future. It lists the titles of periodicals and series published wholly by the PLA or with PLA's participation.
