An interview with Andrzej Nowakowski - the President of Polish Chamber
of Books.
This interview took place in October of 2001, in Cracow. Mr.
Nowakowski's duties, apart from holding the presidency of the Chamber,
are those of managing the Universitas Publishing House.
The following topics were discussed during the inteview:
- The decrease of readership in Poland
- Negative influence on the readership caused by both economical
changes and the state's lack of support
- Actions taken by the Chamber towards the improvement of present
situation
- Involvement of various organisations in the the project

Polish Book Market
The article consists of excerpts, handpicked by the author-Lukasz
Golebiewski-, from his book, entitled: 'The Book Market in Poland',
published in 1998.
The author tries to define and classify all available information about
books published in Poland between 1989-1997. Every year, since 1998,
there has been a new, updated issue of this book.
The excerpts presented in the article present both statistical data
pertaining to the situation of the book market as well as new trends and
possible development.

Book market in Poland
Both of the autors are on staff of the National Library's Book and
Readership Institute. For many years, the Institute has been conducting
systematic studies of the readership and book situation in Poland.
The summary, prepared for the purpose of publishing on the pages of
EBIB, is an updated version of the information presented in the brochure
'The Book Market in Poland', first shown during the International Book
Fair in Frankfurt. It is a clear and comprehensive bit of essential
information on the activities of Polish publishing houses, bookstores
and other businesses dealing with the national book scene.
