This article discusses the role of public libraries in the life of small communities. The need and call for change in the way such libraries function is stressed. According to the author, these libraries should constantly improve the quality of their operation in order to attract new users. The most important issue seems to be the participation, at all stages of development, of the region, reclaiming its cultural identity (archives on local history, publications on the subject), as well as cooperation with regional cultural societies.
