Art. 1: Jan Wolosz
The state's policy in the matter of libraries - hopes and expectations.

The article addresses the problem of the state's library policy, or, rather, its lack thereof. According the the author, there exists a legal structure for this purpose, however, it has never been put to use. In theory, the Council of Ministers and the Minister of Culture and National Heritage are responsible for overseeing the implementation of such policies, however, at present these matters are being dealt with exclusively at the community level.

Art. 2: Anna Sitarska
A polemic of Jan Wolosz' article.

The author disagrees with Jan Wolosz. She points out that Mr. Wolosz limited himself to analysing public libraries exclusively at the same time ignoring the real issues plaguing Polish librarianship - namely, the lack of funding and bad managment of libraries both stemming from administative incompetence. Furthermore, Mr. Wolosz did not mention a fair number of positive phenomena occuring during the last decade - e.g. the enthusiasm of librarians as well as higher level of professional skills.

A society in the age of information - without librarians?

The author reproaches the prime minister's approach to the issue of the role of libraries in the process of building a new modern information society. It is obvious to the author that, if provided with adequate funding, the network of libraries could play a key role in the distribution of easily accessible information.

This letter summerizes the difficulties arising from the adjustment of public library system to the new adminstrative structure's requirements. The author's particular interest lies with the issue of county libraries. The legislature provides for the establishing new branches, however, only a few have been established so far. The author, on behalf of the Association of Polish Librarians, speaks for taking proper action towards the improvement of this situation.
