The article addresses the problem of metadata in electronic documents.
The author explains basic notions referring to metadata and their
significance in the area of information standardisation. He analyses
the metadata format Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DC) for text
documents in WWW, discusses its classes and elements. The author also
gives an example of using the DC standard in META fields of the HTML.
The second part of the article discusses meta-languages (SGML, XML) and
points to differences between cataloguing and creating metadata.

The author discusses the problem of electronic document's description in
the context of Polish standard - PrPN-N-01152-13 developed by the
National Library Standardisation Centre. She presents practical aspects
of electronic cataloguing using the example of Polish libraries which
employ descriptions of electronic documents in their catalogues. She
also shares her opinions and critical remarks on the standardisation
project in the area of definitions and particular description segments.

The author presents American and Canadian description standards for
footnotes in electronic documents APA (American Psychological Association)
and MLA (Modern Languages Association). She conducts their comparative
analysis supported by examples of footnotes for various types of
electronic documents.

The article discusses the development of computer services in a
computerized library within the scope of user communication,
implementation of information services, document presentation and
methods of providing access to library resources. The author discusses
techniques of creation of digital copies by using various computer
programs for processing text, graphics and sound.

Halina Brzezinska-Stec CD-ROM databases at the Main Library of
University of Bialystok
The author discusses sources of information provided on CD-ROMs by the
Scientific Information Department of the Main Library of the Bialystok
University. She shares her observations on the utilisation level of the
information sources by university staff and students, and presents new
methods of promoting the databases in academic environment.
