The article addresses problems affecting the efficient development of databases in Polish libraries, such as an improved cooperation, and unification of the national standards. It stresses the importance of a database as a source of high quality information and examines an economic aspect of a cataloguing process.

The Polish Technical Magazines Database

The article presents the current stage of a project entitled "The Polish Technical Magazines Database" that is a join venture of 20 academic libraries and information centers. The initial planning is discussed: choice of the programming language, selection of periodicals to be indexed, the procedures for input and transfer of data. Detailed analysis of the Internet access, content of records, search strategies and graphic interface is also provided.

The article presents the history and an analysis of the project facilitating an access to various databases developed by the Warsaw University. The report covers a three-year period, 1996-1998.

MIDAS - artifacts cataloguing system

The article describes MIDAS, a material culture collection management system used by 40, Germany-based institutions. The distinctive problems of artifact cataloguing caused by the variable descriptive standards are discussed. The system has been introduced to Poland by the Art History Institute of the Wroclaw University.
